The History of Straight Edge

The Movement
In the 1970s, the punk rock scene of America was beginning to change in almost every aspect. At the same time, a movement began that was against drugs, drinking, promiscuous sex, and many other forms of hedonism.
Coining 'Straight Edge'
In the early 1980s, the band Minor Threat (pictured to the right) wrote a song in support of the new movement called Straight Edge. The message of this song is shockingly clear - there is no need for any kind of drugs in your life, for any reason, whatsoever.
Pushing forward
After Minor Threat's Straight Edge, many bands all over the Western Hemisphere sprang up, claiming Straight Edge and supporting the movement with their message and lyrics.
Today
In the 21st century, Straight Edge has spread all over the world. In many parts of the United States, Straight Edge is even considered a gang.
